The medical name for hair loss is “alopecia.” The treatment for alopecia depends on the cause. Medicated Shampoos, prescription lotions, or pills are used to treat hair loss.
Here at Unique Dermatology, we treat many cases of Alopecia Areata – a type of hair loss where the hair falls out in sections, resulting in hairless patches about the size of a coin or larger. In rare cases, the patient will experience a complete loss of scalp and body hair. This disease may affect children or adults of any age.
The exact cause of Alopecia Areata is not known but some cases can be made worse by stress. Generally though, apart from the hair loss, patients are in good health. In most cases, the hair regrows by itself, but it can take a considerable amount of time without medical assistance.
We treat Alopecia Areata with steroids such as Cortisone injections. This will stimulate hair growth.
The Cortisone protects the hair roots and prompts them to resume making hair. These injections are generally done once per month for a total of two to six injections to stimulate hair re-growth. This treatment only works in the areas that have been injected, it does not prevent hair loss from occurring in other areas.
